I call pieces like these the “core” sculptures. They represent the literal core of the juniper, having had more than 80 percent of the original material carved away. As more material is removed, the beautiful patterns of the wood are revealed. I work with these patterns to carve out and emphasize the wood’s natural features. In some cases, I carve in my own features to add more depth to the wood. The entire piece is then meticulously sanded to at least 400 grit. The final finish depends on the coloration and texture of the individual piece.
